Yeah your right!It doesn't work that way.Once you make your guard you can notch a small piece out on the inside closest to the pole to allow the cable not to come in contact with the guard.

thanks to all who replied.my predator guards are up the pole a ways ,so the coons cant get around them.the problem is i have to use a stepladder for nest checks.i think im going to give the 5 gal pail a try.back in june 2007 before i had pred ator guard i lost most of the eggs/babies.

I noticed in the fall issue of the purple martin update that a 5 gallon pail {plastic} was mounted to the bottom of a northstar house{Tom Rank}.It looks to me that it rides up and down with the house.Does this work for raccoons?Rob Daubs Forest Ontario.

well join the club.sparrows are relentless.for ever one you get rid of it seems 2 take there place.i have a repeater trap and it seems they get wise to it.it works only at certain times?the sparrows will be with you until the last martin leaves.good hunting and may the force be with you!

its probably whatever they can obtain most readily.our martins here take pieces of old corn stalk from the farm behind our property and mud.they do put some nice green leaves on top around the eggs.

on nest checks today found a dead adult male.its been cool here but not cold.cant figure this out.could it be starvation?or old age?anyone one else found this?this is my 6th year ive had martins.they have just begun nest building at their home here in southern ontario {forest}
