Re: Good nest check

Great news David!

Lost all mine with the mid Feb freezes, but have a bunch now and at least five new hatchlings this week (watched them hatch on TV). Probably have more, but this rain needs to stop so I can check the other nests.

Looks like a female Bluebird. Less colorful than the male.

Re: Snake netting

I get mine from Amazon. Good luck! I've had 3 snake attacks this season. Netting caught them all.

Martins and Bees

I know Martins will occasionally eat honey bees, but at my site, I mainly see dragon flies on the menu. I am thinking about donating and erecting a Trio house at a Parish (County) Park that features a walking tour of a swamp and a nature center that has information /exhibits of birds and other...

House move after arrival question

My Martins are a few days late, but not really a bad thing. I am having some major landscaping work in my backyard and it will entail moving the houses between 10 - 20 feet. Work has been delayed because I live close to Mississippi River and yard is saturated due to high river levels. If Martins arr...

Conrad,

Mine all fledged in late May. Like yours, I'll get the occasional visit or hear a few up in the neighborhood skies. Seems early this year.

Am jealous reading about our friends up North that still only have eggs or recent births.

Great pic!

Seems like 85% of what the parents here bring in is dragon flies.

First group has fledged!

A lot of noise and excitement here as one group of six has fledged. Other groups will not be far. Most flying well with occasional roof and awkward landings.

One on the ground this morning. Looks to be in good health, maybe just resting/gaining strength.

Early Easter egg delivery in South Louisiana

Nest check this morning revealed 3 nests with eggs - 1, 3 and 4.
Momma Martin with 4 eggs did not leave during the initial nest check. First time that happened.

Good luck all and Happy Easter!!

Bird mites on humans!

I've had Martins since 2001 and, for the first time, I have found evidence of bird mites in my house. I have bites all over and have positively identified them as bird mites. Wife has a couple of bites as well. Weird feeling when you can feel them crawling on you..... All of my young (27) have fledg...

First person in family to have Martin housing also. I seem to recall seeing some houses along canal banks in my hometown, but never knew what they were. Strange, as I would have imagined my Dad would have enjoyed having a house and we had the perfect set-up along a canal. He passed when I was 18 and...
