Re: Subbies tearing it up
Hi Gary, Thats quite alot, if there's a silver lining, the survivors will be fat and happy. suspect your right, iv seen some unwanted intrusions but it doesn't last long and now they are guarding their homes. The subbie body language tells on them, they look guilty before going in...hesitate, look a...

Re: Purple Martins and Hawk discussions need more specificity
Sounds like a nice coexistence. One that will work for your colony. Hummingbirds have been found to nest near hawks, it was interesting because if the research folks drew a triangle under a hawks nest hummingbird nests will be located in the zone, the hawk presence keeps away blue Jay's and others t...

You are correct, hate to see them turn on each other though. Those SYs will be back next year for another round...as ASYs too true. All part of it; elation, frustration, and more elation.

Subbies tearing it up
Well, found a dead chick under the gourds. Must have been dragged and dropped today, freshly dead. 5 days old. Thats 6 chicks I attribute to subbies. Maybe more, ill check. There are three males ganging up on the adults. Think this chick came from a lower gourd, subbies were really after that one, i...

Re: Why are people reluctant to report sub adults on the scout report?
Subadults at my site are honestly a nuisance. Between knocking older young crowding the entrance for food off porches and pulling out hatchlings, the last thing on my mind is reporting them. Here too. Lost 5 chicks out of a 6 chick nest last week to these darn subbies, been mobbing the residents an...

Re: Sparrow traps continued…
Did you order the ST1? Can use it like the other ground traps, place it where you see sparrows. Iv caught them out in the open, right under a gourd rack and on our covered back patio...where you see them. Sprinkle a bit of white millet around it. Or just white feathers, bits of pieces of nesting mat...

Randy, do you find the older a bird gets they select the uppermost cavities? Guess it will be in general, their selection is based on fly way too id imagine?

Re: Sparrow traps continued…
It is a downfall...cavity traps I mean. Its a bit disruptive to the martins brining it up and down. Yet they forgive quickly. Could let them build, once they stuff the gourd martins won't be able to enter anyway. Then set the trap? In this case a cavity trap is much better than a ground trap. Each o...

Re: First eggs and a couple interesting nests
Wonderful way to celebrate mothers day! Good group of eggs too, sounds like a wonderful season so far. Love finding what they bring in to nest build. Odd stuff: foil (its still in there) bright orange weedeater wire, 1 inch by 1 inch piece of bright red and white Christmas or birthday paper wrapping...
