Re: Troyer Gourd Poles
well really you only need to get to the top, preferably while on the ground, lol. what you could do is get the replacement rope (does it come with eye bolt...IDK) secure the new rope to the replacement bolt and all you would have to do (if you can't get it down) is go up there, unscrew the old eye b...

Re: Labor Day Weekend Fledge!
Hi Carol!
If they have fledged out and are accompanied with their adults id suggest they will be fine, I don't know the days your birds actually leave...if most left and these remaining are being taken home at night id say they will be ok. I wouldn't worry too much.

Re: Labor Day Weekend Fledge!
Sorry those chicks were abandoned!!!! But a determined female kept at it despite going it alone and she did it. Sounds like you were watching close. Sounds like a dizzying ending to a season, good lord! Late nests are rough for a lot of reasons. All you listed are reasons I dread them. Glad that las...

Two universal sparrow traps
Got this guy today, he has been coming around past few days but would only look into the bait trey-drop arm area of the ground trap and go elsewhere. Set up one universal sparrow trap, baited with popcorn and millet and placed it near where the bait birds hang out, but didn't go in. Zipped tied two ...

Re: New air rifle
Same here, they have not found the suet yet, more rain here locally so plenty to eat...soon as they run out of food this winter (what passes for it here), they will come around. HOSP are getting trapped at a rate of 2 maybe 3 a week, slow as well. I think they watch the doves come in their droves, f...

Your welcome! Others would join in but as their season closes, off to other things we have neglected. Like washing dishes, eating, cutting grass, work, etc. Haha. Your right, he was meant to survive and hatched at just the right place. The numbers of bird pairs really don't matter, small colonies, w...

Re: 7/19 Late Hatch
Its a tough spot to be in and a testament to your care. Never give up! I feared the worst for a bit, really did. I know I can only feed them for a bit, rehabbers can only do so much yet its more than I can for sure. Id try to find a rehabber you like, keep them in your back pocket...something to put...

Re: New air rifle
Yep. This winter ill open a window and sit way back in the room to snipe starlings off the suet feeder. Wish I had 3 acres, but do not. It all works out in the end.

Re: Cleaning gourds another question
Defed.. To make a subfloor for my gourds, I cut a circle , the size of the bottom of my gourds, out of 1/2 thick rubber door mats. I drill some holes in them for air flow. To insert in the gourds, I fold them together, like a slice of pizza, slip them into the access port, then they open up and lay...

Re: 7/19 Late Hatch
To find a reported roost go to the main page, look for research, them martin roost study, the US will appear, all the purple and yellow dots are roosts. (Screen shot attached). Ok, are the adults returning with the fledges? Sometimes they just hang out and watch for them to go in. That is a sign the...

Re: 7/19 Late Hatch
Oh boy, they aren't stopping? Id worry they will believe he is dead unless they see or hear him. Could get some food in him regardless of the weight and get him back in quick. Watch and see if they are coming by to feed him. If they do not, is there a roost near you? Or a rehabber? Reason why I'm as...

20240818_122552.jpg 20240818_122614.jpg 20240818_122517.jpg For those who know me, I'm not shy about expressing my views on HOSP control. Ill admit, when I first started I was at peace with them off season until I realised like the terminator, they will never stop. I now try to turn it into an art....

Re: Repeating bait trap question.
Don't be embarrassed Brent! Heck i caught a toad in ours once, no clue how he got up 2 feet and into the trap but there he was.
You'd have to devise a way to keep him off the tree and need to go to the trap...sure can do it and get it, that trap will do it.

Re: Cleaning gourds another question
If your worried about water in the gourd, you could run a test. Clean it out and completely dry the gourd, put paper towels in it across the bottom. Suggest you put the gourd arm in it as it is normally hung. Elevate it a bit off the ground so pooling water won't creep up into the bottom holes. Then...

Re: They don't want to fly the nest - should I be concerned?
Minimize your handling of them now, in other words dont hold a chick and get it to fly. Sounds like you did a couple of them like that. They do not need our help, avoid that like the plague and do not make it a practice. My 2 cents but I feel strongly about that, cannot force them.
