Re: New housing and location for year 12 trying

Hi Ryan,
Lots of us have been pulling for you for years!
Have you been aware of any activity on the North Star you put up in that neighboring town, or the chalets you put up there in downtown Eganville?

Re: snakes! real problem

I've never understood why someone doesn't offer a system to mount snake netting to. I've hinted at it to the PMCA over the years, and even reached out directly to a well-known manufacturer about making something available for purchase. No replies, nothing offered, nothing. Even something as basic as...

Re: bird ID needed

Hi Kegger,
Based on what appears to be a fairly long, slender tail, and the fact you're in Florida, I'd say that's a Cooper's Hawk.

Re: missing glide button making hub on MP rack hard lower

Hi Lewis, One thing I've done in a pinch when I wasn't able to take the hub off the pole to fix, was found the thickest nylon zip ties I could find, and feed the end into the glide button hole, and out the bottom or top of the hub (whether you're working with the bottom or top hub holes) and then ti...

Re: House Stuck at top of pole

I would crank the winch back up, to where to you just take the slack out of the cable, but it's not very tight.
That way if it does dislodge on its own, it may only drop 4 or 5 inches or so.
Hopefully your better half is not being too hard on herself about it.

Re: House Stuck at top of pole

John - you have much more experience with Trendsetter systems than myself (actually I have no experience with them).
If for any reason that sounds like a bad idea, I promise I won't be offended if you say so.

Re: House Stuck at top of pole

Wondering if you could back the winch down just a couple of cranks, and possibly toss a rope over the top of the house - taking care to not catch the top perches or the roof cap. You could use the rope to provide just enough downward force to get it unstuck. It probably would not take very much down...

Re: Going Down After 22 Years

Hi Bumbee, I've always enjoyed your posts. You've always brought a wealth of knowledge to the forum, as well as some really cool, cutting edge housing designs. I completely understand where you're coming from. These smaller hawks, namely sharpies and cooper's, have really done a lot of damage to the...

Re: Remove sparrow nest?

HI CAK,
If it were me, I would not risk it. In my opinion your remaining 20-day-old baby will be safer if you leave the house sparrow nest alone.
That was a really good call on your part factoring in the potential male house sparrow rage from tearing out its nest.

My apologies - I better understand the situation now. That is a bit of a pickle.
DaveH is definitely on the right track.
If it helps at all, here's a detailed drawing of the winch, and its components:

Ryan this is the most awesome news! I was getting excited reading your post and seeing the photo - I can only imagine how exciting it is for you! That would be so cool if he is your resident SY from 2019! Seems even more likely since as you pointed out, he picked up using the WDCs so quickly, which ...

Re: Trio Martin House "Brake Cable Tensioner"

Hi Stuart, The Brake Cable Tensioner is already complete and ready to go out of the box - no additional assembly needed for it. It's a simple, yet proven design. It's basically a tiny band brake. The wingnut with the spring under it on the lower right side of the winch housing (which is used to adju...

Re: Help with house design

Hi Mcetta, That is a gorgeous Martin house! It has the look of the more vintage houses, while incorporating the starling resistant entrances, deep cavities, and easy raising/lowering. The decks and roofs you added (which in my opinion are a nice detail that really adds to the overall appearance) sho...

Re: SREH questions

Hi Laura, The problem is probably not with the porch height, but instead the entrance being a bit too narrow, since the unmodified Trio/Nature House holes you placed the Clinger plates over, are only 2.125" inches in width. The Clinger entrances themselves are 2.32". That .2" is most ...
