Yes it does require cutting away some of the gourd, but it is in an area totally covered by the tunnel. It makes your gourd actually larger usable space on the inside. I believe that this procedure is shown on the S&K website where these gourds are sold

I haven't bought any items but so far have eliminated Starlings for several years now just by gluing sign board on the porches. That raises the floor for all troyer gourds. And you can still use the traps when necessary for sparrows.
